The Shelby County Historical
Society will hold its monthly meeting September 17, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. in the
Shelby County Museum on Pecan Street. Our guest speaker this month will be
Dr. Jodi Edward Ginn. The
topic will be "East Texas Troubles: The Allred Rangers' Cleanup of San
Augustine." This is the story of a rural community's extrication from the
grip of a vicious criminal gang who built their power by exploiting
institutionally marginalized African Americans. In telling this story, Dr.
Ginn reveals a multifaceted history of the reform of the Texas Rangers, and of
an unexpected alliance between the legendary frontier lawman and black residents
of the Jim Crow South. Dr. Ginn will also be holding a book signing while
he is here. The public is invited to attend our meetings. Also, if
you are interested in the History of our State and Area, we invite you to come
join our organization and help us get the word out about all the fascinating
history that surrounds us all.
