The Shelby County Historical
Society will hold its monthly meeting on January 21, 2020 at 2:00 P. M. in the
Shelby County Museum on Pecan Street. The speakers this month will be The
Daughters of the Republic of Texas. They will speak to us about Faith on the
Frontier. Everyone is invited to attend.

WILBURN FLOURNOY Wilburn “Pete” Flournoy, 78, of Tenaha, died January 8, 2020, in Nacogdoches. Interment was in Buena Vista Cemetery, Shelby County. He was born July 1, 1941, in the Patroon Community of Shelby County, to Arbie Alec Flounoy and Zelma Viola Wilkinson Flournoy. He graduated from Center High School and went on to join the United States National Guard. He was preceded in death by, Parents; Brothers, Dalton Flournoy, Clifford Flournoy, Paul Flournoy; Sister, Betty Duke; Sisters-in-law, Norma Flournoy, Jean Flournoy; Brothers-in-law, Ray Lowry, Jimmy Purdy. He was born September 5, 1933, to John Norris Scruggs and Annis Mae Lee Scruggs. He served his country in the United States Army. SERGEANT MAJOR
(RETIRED) BOOKER GILFORD COLEMAN Sergeant Major (Retired) Booker Gilford Coleman, 90, of Lawton, Oklahoma, died January 10, 2020 in Lawton. Interment with Full Military Honors will be in the Fort Sill Cemetery under the direction of the Howard-Harris Funeral Services. SGM (Ret) Coleman was born May 26, 1929 in Center, Texas to Alvin Coleman and Edith Louise (Osby) Coleman. He is a graduate of the C. H. Daniel High School in Center, Texas. He enlisted into the United States Army on June 9, 1949, and retired as a Sergeant Major on January 31, 1973 after honorably serving over 23 years. He was a Combat Veteran of both the Korean War and Viet Nam Conflict, and completed other assignments in Germany, Hawaii, Fort Bliss, Fort Carson, Fort Chaffee, Fort Riley, Fort Sam Houston, Fort Sill, and Macomb, IL. His awards include the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Bronze Star with Valor for his heroism in Yulmak, Korea; the Army Commendation Medal; Korean Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Good Conduct Medal (7th Award); Viet Nam Service Medal; Viet Nam Campaign Medal with-Device, and the Over Seas Service Ribbon. Following his Military retirement he was employed as a Department of the Army Civilian at Fort Sill, and served in TASC and DOL from 1973 to his retirement from Civil Service in 1989. He was preceded in death by, Wife, Odell (Lister) Coleman; Father, Alvin Coleman; Mother, Edith (Coleman) Gardner; Sister, Tommie J. Coleman; Brother, Richard L. Coleman. Survivors include, Sons, Gilford B. Coleman of Dallas, Texas, Steven R. Coleman (wife, Debra), of Rowlett, Texas; Daughter, Anita R. Scott (husband, COL(R) Will, Jr.), of Lawton, Oklahoma; Local survivors are Sister-in-law: Norma Lister of Shelbyville, Texas and several cousins. Services are under the direction of Hicks Mortuary of Center, Texas and Howard Harris Funeral Home of Lawton, OK. |
