New Stuff/Additions/Corrections

        

The King-Oats Cemetery, aka Oates at Day School, will have a Historic Texas Cemetery Medallion erected on October 13, 2007.  There will be a meeting at 9:30am at the historic Shelby County Courthouse Courtroom.  At 1:30pm attendees will meet at the King-Oats cemetery for the installation of the Medallion.  For additional information email Reece Stanley at  rstanley@ndemand.com

 

 The Homecoming of Center High School has been change (again) to September 14 - 15.

Since the multiple changes in the dates of homecoming, some are keeping the original date and some have moved to next year, etc.

So it is best that we do not post any homecoming events, other that the current date above.

JOHN TALMADGE HICKMAN
    John Talmadge Hickman, 80, of Baytown, formerly of Tenaha died August 10, 2007.  Burial was in Old Home Cemetery, Shelby County.  Born October 17, 1926, in Shelby County, he was the son of John Terry and Dena Mea Ramsey Hickman.  Mr. Hickman was a Electrican with Shell Oil.  Mr. Hickman was preceded in death by his Parents; Wife, Sue Hickman; Sister Emogene Ward.  Survivors include son, John Gilbert Hickman of Baytown; Brothers Preston Hickman of Carthage, Charles Hickman of Zavala and Eldrige Hickman of Magnolia Arkansas.  Mangum Funeral Home.
CHRISTINE FULTS SEARS
    Christine Fults Sears,  91, of Nederland died August 11, 2007. Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Park. Born November 30, 1915, in Center, she was the daughter of W. O. and Beulah Bush. Ms. Sears was preceded in death by Husbands, Arlon Fults and N. E. "Sebo" Sears.   Survivors include sister, Murel Bush Stephens Thomason of Center; Stepson, Ronnie Sears of Forth Worth; Stepdaughter, Judy Keys of Houston.  Mangun Funeral Home.
LOIS RHODES
    Lois Rhodes, 66, of Timpson died August 11, 2007 in Houston. Burial was in Timpson Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery Shelby County.  Born June 16, 1941 in the Waterman Community, she was the daughter of W. G. and Lula Edwards Burkhalter.  She was preceded in death by her Parents; Brothers, Joe Hurston Burkhalter and Delton Burkhalter; Sisters, Bobbie Lou Holb and Wilma Adams. Survivors include, Husband Charles S. Rhodes of Timpson; Sons, Marvin Earl Biggar of Center, Chris Rhodes of Timpson; Daughters, Deborah Jordan of Spring, Becky Walker of Joaquin; Brother, James Weldon Burkhalter of Texas City.
VIRGIE HENRY KOTERAS
    Virgie Henry Koteras, 78, of Lake Timpson died August 10, 2007.  Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Timpson.  Born November 28, 1928, in Corsicana, she was the daughter of Autry and Era Holland Henry.  Ms. Koteras is survived by Husband, A. J. Koteras of Lake Timpson; Daughter, Beverly Drobina of Cleveland; Son, Tony Trumps of Georgetown; Stepchildren, Charlotte McMillian of North Carolina, Terri Carson of Kingwood and Keith Koteras of Spring.  Taylor Funeral Home.
LUCILLE MCSWAIN
    Lucille McSwain, 96, of Center died August 12, 2007 in Center.  Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Park.  Born August 28, 1921, in Oil City, Louisiana, she was the daughter of John Henry and Nonnie Squires Allen.  Ms McSwain was a Homemaker.  Survivors include Husband, D. C. McSwain of Center; Daughter, Judy Sammons, Joan Baldwin and Shelby Ross, all of Center; Sister, Nelva Bowers of Lubbock; Brothers, Evin Allen of Pasadena and Arlon Allen of Lufkin.  Watson & Sons Funeral Home.
MARY ANGELA DAW
    Mary Angela Daw, 44, of Virginia died August 13, 2007 in Center.  Burial was in Joaquin Cemetery.  Born November 9, 1962, in Thibodeaux. Louisiana, she was the daughter of Samuel R. Daw and Carolyn Cockrell Daw.  She was preceded in death by her Father Sammy Daw.  Ms. Daw was an educator in both Texas and Virginia.  Survivors include Mother: Carolyn Cockrell Daw of Conroe; sister Suzanne Hunt of Coppell.
DOROTHY B. COLLIER EDDINS
    Dorothy B. Collier Eddins, 87, of Bronson died August 14, 2007 at her home.  Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Park.  Born April 16, 1920, in Mooringsport, Louisiana, she was the daughter of George Augustus Collier and Gladys Mavor Winn Collier. Ms. Eddins was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, L. C. Eddins; Son, Billy Ray Eddins; Brother G. A. Gollier; Sister Nell Chance.  Survivors include Children, Dorothy Marie Whiteman, Carolyn Faye Smith, both of Bronson, Nancy Drew of Pineland and Bobbie Eddins of Center.  Watson and Sons Funeral Home.
JEANELL SMITH SHOFNER
    Jeanell Smith Shofner, 70, died August 14, 2007.  Burial was in Forest Park Westheime-Houston.  Born December 18, 1936 in Sabine County, she was the daughter of Ida and Reece Smith.  She was a 1953 graduate of Shelbyville High School.  Ms. Shofner was preceded in death by her Mother and two Sisters.  Survivors include Husband Morris Shofner; Father Reece Smith of Milam; Daughters, Wanda Naumann and Juanice West of Houston; Brothers, Millard Smith of Milam, Lamar Smith of Patroon, Tommy Smith of Brookland; Sisters, Janice Hughes of Center, Brenda Elliott of Lufkin. 
CECIL E. MASSEY
    Cecil E. Massey, 81, of Center died August 15, 2007 at his residence.  Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Park.  Born June 3, 1926, in Center, he was the son of Johnnie t. Massey and Lola Hunter Massey.  Mr. Massey owned the Massey Feed in Center.  He was preceded in death by Wife, Mary Eldred Jones Massey; Sister, Johnnie Ruth Massey Brown.  Survivors include Sister, Doris Massey Parker of Center; Sons, C. Scott Massey of Shreveport, Randall W. Massey of Houston and Mark Massey of Houston.
THE REVEREND CAROLYN LEIGH DAVIS
    The Reverend Carolyn Leigh Davis, 71, of Aurora, Colorado died August 15, 2007.  Burial was in Colorado.  Born March 18, 1936, in Houston, she was the daughter of William Harvey Speight and Veral Audra Nunn Speight Poole.  Rev. Davis was preceded in death by her father, Harvey Speight; Mother Audra Poole; Husband, L. B. Davis; and Sister Neline Poole Wagonhauser.  Survivors include Daughters, Leigh Porterfield of Center; Rena Rogers of Colorado Springs, Roberta Albi of Denver; Son, John C. Rogers, Jr of The Colony, Texas. 
JAMES R. TAYLOR
   James R. Tayklor, of Greenville died August 15, 2007 in Greenville. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Center.   Born April 18, 1920, in Center he was the son of Duke and Evelana Taylor.  Mr. Taylor was a Veteran of the Army, having served in WWII.  He was preceded in death by Parents; Son, James Duke Taylor and Four Brothers.  Survivors include Wife Ida Raymond Taylor; Daughters, Tommie Hodges of Bakersfield, California and Pat Wells of Atlanta, Georgia.
