THE SHELBY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY ANNOUNCES MEETING

The Shelby County Historical Society will hold their monthly meeting on October 18, 2011 at the Shelby County Museum. The guest speaker will be Dr. Duane Hooper of Bay Area Christian School in League City, Texas. He was born in Shelby County and descends from Richard Hooper, an early settler during the Republic of Texas days, who was elected as Shelby County’s first delegate to the first Congress of Texas. Dr. Hooper was the pastor of Ramah Baptist Church at one time. He has been principal at the Bay Area School for 21 years. He will speak about his book, Such is the Cause of Texas.

JAMES PAUL DOCKENS
James Paul Dockens, 81, of Joaquin, died October 2, 2011 in Center. Burial was in White Rock Cemetery, Shelby County. He was born in the Aiken community of Shelby County on April 20, 1930 to Arlie Dockens and Ressie Grant Dockens. He was preceded in death by, Parents; Son, Robert Earl Dockens; Brother, Leon Dockens. Survivors include, Wife, Dorothy Ann Dockens of Joaquin; Daughters, Julie Ashby & husband, Craig of Odem, Audrey Richard Nixon & husband, Haskell of Gary; Sons, James Ray Dockens of Waxahachie, Kenneth Paul Dockens & wife, Karen of Waxahachie, Derral Martin of Milano; Sister, Joy Eddins of De Kalb.

Garland Sanders Burrows, 89, of Center, died October 5, 2011. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Park, Center, Texas. She was born December 10, 1921 in Geneva, Texas to Dan Sanders, and Berta Sanders Gillis. Survivors include, Daughter, Anita Burrows Rawls & husband, Prince of Sherman, Texas; Sons, Danny Burrows & wife, Carletta of Kilgore, Texas, Thomas Burrows & wife, Terri of Coppell, Texas.

JAMES F. RAMSEY
James F. Ramsey, 68, of Joaquin, died October 4, 2011 in Bossier City, Louisiana. Burial will be in Lone Cedar Cemetery, Shelby County. He was born February 19, 1943 in Timpson, Texas to J.P. Ramsey and Era Richards Ramsey. James served his county in the United States Army. He was preceded in death by, Parents; Wives, Janet and Era Lou Ramsey. Survivors include, Sons, Vince Ramsey & wife, Crickett of Logansport, Louisiana, Jason Ramsey & wife, Barbara of League City; Daughter, Jamie Griffin of Tenaha; Sisters, Melba Fults of Center, Faye Socia of Nacogdoches.

LINDA LEE STARK SMITH
Linda Lee Stark Smith, 79, of Indianapolis, Indiana, died August 20, 2011 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her cremains will be interred in Wimberly Cemetery, Shelby County. She was born November 24, 1931 in Huntington, West Virginia to Stanley and Ann Stark. She was preceded in death by, Parents; Husband, James Smith; Sister, Chloe Ann Stark Hollinger. Survivors include, Stepdaughters, Jennie Troxell (Kermitt) of Markleville, Indiana, Sandy Crail (Roger) of Pendleton, Indiana; Stepson, James T. Smith, Jr. (Patsy) of Ava, Missouri; Sons, Greg Stephenson of Indianapolis, Indiana, Jeff Stephenson (Debbie) of Indianapolis, Indiana; Brother, Stan Stark (Clare) of Ironton, Ohio. She and Jim moved from Indianapolis to Shelbyville, Texas where they built, and for many years ran Smith's Acres, a general store with a small fish camp. Linda also enjoyed working for the Sheriff's Office as a receptionist.

John Brinton Hargrove, 24, of Shelbyville, died October 3, 2011. Burial was in Strong Cemetery, Shelby County. He was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on May 4, 1987 to Johnny Hargrove and Connie Taylor Hargrove. Survivors include, Parents, Johnny and Connie Hargrove of Shelbyville; Wife, Julie Hargrove of Shelbyville; Brother, Jared Hargrove of Shelbyville; Sisters, Jessica Hargrove of Shelbyville, Kim Bridges of Center, Cindy Sharp & husband, Richard of Joaquin.

FRANLIN DON “Donny” MAY, JR.
Franklin Don "Donny" May, Jr., 32, died October 4, 2011 in Mesquite, Texas. Burial will be in Laurel Land Cemetery, Dallas, Texas. He was born April 12, 1979 in Dallas, Texas. He attended school in Joaquin. Survivors include, Father, Don May; Stepmother, Mary May of Joaquin, Texas; Mother, Shirley Howard and Stepfather, Larry Howard of Mesquite, Texas; Brother, David May of Redwood, MN; Sister, Lee Ann May of Dallas.

Lee Ballard, 25, of Missouri City, died October 3, 2011. Burial will be in Woods Cemetery, Panola County. He was born on November 1, 1985 in Houston, Texas to Michael Lee Ballard and Melinda Sue Brooks White. Survivors include, Father, Mike Ballard and wife, Kim of Houston; Mother, Melinda White and husband, Dale of Missouri City; Sister, Melanie Ballard of Tenaha; Grandmothers, Jean Ballard and husband, Stacy of Tenaha,

Albert Redler Jr., 76, of Joaquin, Texas died October 4, 2011. Burial will be in Veterans Cemetery, Keithville, Louisiana. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana June 24. 1935 to Albert and Marion Redler. He served his country in the U. S. Air Force.
