Elizabeth "Bettie" Hill |
Elizabeth "Bettie" HILL was born June, 1840 in Tennessee, a full blood Cherokee Indian. This is my maternal G.G. GM. Bettie was married four times. Her first husband was an unknown HOPKINS. She had two children by this HOPKINS: Mary "Molly" HOPKINS, CONNELL and Clarence HOPKINS. Bettie's second marriage was to an unknown TANNER. She had three children by this TANNER: Carrie TANNER and Kittie TANNER, HICKEY; these girls were twins. Also, Isabel "Bell" TANNER. Bettie next married my G.G. GF. A Frenchman, Augustus "Anthony" FRANCIS, married Jan. 3, 1871 in Jefferson Co., Arkansas. Two children were born to this union: Eugene Anthony FRANCIS (my G. GF) buried at Mt. Olive Cemetery; Shelby Co., TX . Golena FRANCIS died in childhood. Eugene and Golena were twins. Augustus FRANCIS died in 1879 and Bettie married for the last time to George L. VAUGHAN. Bettie and George lived in Timpson. This family moved from Jefferson Co. Arkansas to Shelby Co., Texas in the late 1880's. Bettie died in 1903. Her son, Eugene Anthony FRANCIS wanted to bury his mother at the Mt. Olive Cemetery as he lived at the Stockman community but the one's in charge wouldn't let him bury Bettie there because she was an Indian so Eugene had her buried at the Dixon Cemetery. Two of Bettie's daughters are buried at Dixon next to her: Bell Johnson and Kitty Hickey, Kitty doesn't have a headstone. troyceandemily@bellsouth.net Troyce Hendricks
