Constable J. T. Hughes - 1979 - 1984

Jewel Theron Hughes, Jr. born September 15, 1925 to Theron and Thelma Hughes.
He served the Army 1943-1946. He was wounded in 1945 and awarded the Purple
Heart, 3 Star Commander Infantry Badge and a GC Medal. J.T. married Dolores Clark, daughter of Cossie and Della (Ramsey) Clark of
the Huber Community. J.T. came back from service; he worked at Johnnie Johnson Service Station on
Tenaha Street. He also worked at the planer for his Grandpa J.W.C. Then 1952 he
and Hoyt Walker opened H&W Plumbing Company. They worked together until 1958 at
which time J.T. and Dolores went into the plumbing business for themselves.
J.T. ran for Constable in 1979, he held the office and ran again in 1984,
winning for the second time. One week later on May 11, he was fishing on Toledo
Bend when he fell from the boat and drowned. He was found two days later and is
buried in Oaklawn Cemetery. Delores was sworn in as Constable, making her the
first woman Constable in Shelby County. She held the office until her
brother-in-law Jack ran for and was elected the next term.
