Raymond D. "Jack" Hughes
Raymond D. (Jack) Hughes was born January 8, 1928 to Theron and Thelma
Hughes. He attended Center Schools quitting to go to work. Later he finished and
attended college while in the military. Jack went to work in 1943 at
Consolidated Steel in Orange, Texas. He went into the Army in 1945 and two years
later transferred into the Air Force. He was stationed throughout the United
States and served in Germany, North Africa, Guam and twice in the Philippines.
Jack’s primary job was Military Intelligence and Communications. He served the
military for over twenty-three years, reserves for seven years, retiring with
thirty years service.
Jack married Pauline “Polly” Rose. Jack and Polly were partners with Johnny in
Hughes Furniture and Hughes Gas, and then brought the business from Johnny.
After closing the business in 1974 he worked for Alton in security at the Texaco
Refinery.
When J.T. drowned in 1984, Dolores finished out his term. Jack ran for the
Constable Office as a write-in-candidate in the November Election. He was
elected; he served as Constable for Precinct 1 for fourteen years.
