Sheriff Jesse Sample - 1933 - 1939
Sheriff Sample was born in 1879 and died in 1948. Sheriff Sample served the County from 1933 through 1939. He followed Mrs. Jim O'Banion whose husband had died in office. This was in the deep depression when times were hard and there were many who tried to make extra "Bucks" by making white Lightening and Moonshine whiskey in the back woods. Sheriff Sample was raiding a still and bringing in the evidence to the jail where you might find he and his deputies pouring a big quantity of whiskey down the curb in from of the jail and caused a lot of mouths to water.
