TRUITT CEMETERY
SHELBY COUNTY, TEXAS

The Truitt Cemetery is located six miles southwest of Joaquin off Highway 7. Signs on Highway 7 indicate the turn off to the cemetery. Turn onto the dirt road for about three miles and the cemetery is on the left. Just follow the signs. The cemetery was founded by James Truit on July 3, 1848 at the death of his wife Sarah Hall Truitt. Sarah was the first person to be buried in the cemetery, she died July 3, 1848. James Truit purchased the land that surrounds the present Truitt Cemetery. Sarah Truitt was bed ridden and from her window she saw the hill and requested that she be buried there. Today the cemetery has a serene setting with its manacured grounds and pavillion/chapel. The state has placed an historical marker on the grounds. A visit to this country setting will give one peace of mind.
