Tidbits of Shelby County History
Shelby County Judges

Today's article is from the museum's file cabinet. There wasn't an author or a date on the information. I estimate it was written in the mid-1980s. If anyone has additional information about the various judges and their dates of service, please let me know so I can update the information. Enjoy!

O.R. Hooper was county judge at the time the courthouse records were destroyed in a fire in 1882. I do not have a list of any county judges prior to that date.

I have a list of Sheriffs for Shelby County, but I am not sure of the dates. If anyone has a list of sheriffs with their date of service, please let me know so I can update the information.

Alfred George was the early day Sheriff of Shelby County. All the sheriffs were housed in Shelbyville, the county seat, until 1866 when records were taken from Shelbyville in the middle of the night. R.L. Parker had established the new county seat 7 miles northwest of Shelbyville.  The county seat town was named Center because it was supposedly the county's center.

Note: Don't forget to join the Shelby County Historical Society (Museum) if you haven't already. You can join for just $25 a year for your family. This is the Museum's main source of funding. Also, if you haven’t toured the museum lately, now is a good time to see what is happening. Show your kids some history of Shelby County by bringing them to the museum.
